Senior High Schools owe ECG over GH₵45m – Dubik Mahama
The Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Samuel Dubik Mahama, has revealed that Senior High Schools across the country collectively owe the company over GH₵45 million.
He clarified that the recent disconnection of Accra Academy was part of a broader nationwide initiative to recover outstanding debts.
Mr. Dubik Mahama raised worries about the increasing debt owed by different clients, stressing the importance of taking immediate steps to tackle the problem.
“In the present situation, the outstanding bill for schools is nearing GHC45m,” Mr. Dubik Mahama informed TV3 during an interview, further stating, “When considering all entities nationwide, the total debt appears to be around GH₵2.5bn based on the debt stock I have observed.”
Apologizing for any inconvenience caused, Mr. Dubik Mahama assured that the disconnection at Accra Academy was not the primary objective of the company.
“For Accra Academy and others, I apologize for yesterday’s events, I understand it was traumatic. That was not the main goal of the company. I spoke with the Director General of the Ghana Education Service, and he has committed to meeting with me before the weekends to find lasting solutions to these issues and how to address them in the future,” stated Mr. Mahama.
On Tuesday, February 21, the ECG report indicated that Accra Academy Senior High School had been disconnected from the power grid because of an unpaid debt of GH¢400,000.
In an interview on the Citi Breakfast Show, Paul Agraga, the head of prosecution at ECG, clarified that the disconnection is part of a continuous effort to recoup outstanding payments owed to the company.
“We usually deploy a team to periodically notify our customers of their debts to prevent accumulation. For instance, Accra Academy currently owes ECG over GH¢400,000.”
