Kumasi Market Women Threaten to Vote Against NPP Over Socio-Economic Development Concerns

Traders at the Racecourse Market in Kumasi, Ashanti Region, have issued a stern warning to the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) that their votes in the upcoming election will be contingent on significant socio-economic development in the region. This warning follows the recent appointment of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, a prominent figure from the Ashanti region, as the running mate to the NPP’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Key Concerns Raised by Market Women

Stalled Market Projects:

The traders expressed deep frustration over the numerous abandoned market projects in the Ashanti region. Christabel Amoah, a market leader, highlighted that despite their longstanding support for the NPP, there has been little to no progress in completing vital market infrastructures, leaving traders stranded and markets in disrepair.

Deplorable Road Conditions:

The poor state of roads leading to the Racecourse market has significantly hindered economic activities. The traders emphasized that the neglected infrastructure not only affects their daily operations but also diminishes the region’s overall financial viability.

Neglect by Elected Representatives:

The traders criticized Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, who has served as the Member of Parliament for the Manhyia North constituency for over 16 years, for failing to address the issues at the Krofrom market—a major trading center within his constituency. They are skeptical about his ability to bring about change now that he has been appointed as the NPP’s running mate.

Traders’ Statements

“We voted the NPP into power 8 years ago, but we haven’t been attended to in terms of development. Traders across the city are left stranded. Markets in the city have been abandoned. We will advise ourselves if they fail to complete these markets before the elections,” said Christabel Amoah.

Another trader added, “NAPO has been MP for 16 years and the abandoned Krofrom market is an issue he could have addressed but he didn’t and we don’t expect him to address our problem now that he has been appointed as running mate.”
