Romance Fraud
Ghanaian social media personality Mona Faiz Montrage, also known as Hajia4Real, has admitted guilt in a $2m romance scam case in the United States (U.S).
According to the US Attorney’s Office website, she pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to receive stolen money on Wednesday, February 21, potentially facing up to five years in prison.
Damian Williams, the US Attorney for the Southern District of New York, disclosed the news, emphasizing the harm caused by the romance scam to vulnerable elderly victims who believed in fake online connections.
Hajia4Real has agreed to forfeit $2,164,758.41 and make restitution in the same amount. She is set to be sentenced by U.S. District Judge Paul A. Crotty later on.
Extradited from the UK, Hajia4Real was accused of involvement in a $2 million romance scam known as ‘sakawa,’ targeting older, single Americans. The charges against her include wire fraud, money laundering, receipt of stolen money, and conspiracy to receive stolen money, carrying varying maximum sentences.
The prosecution revealed that she was part of a Criminal Enterprise in Ghana that executed fraudulent activities against individuals and businesses in the US, particularly through romance scams, deceiving victims into believing they were in genuine romantic relationships.
Hajia4Real received fraudulent funds totaling over $2 million from victims tricked by the Enterprise. Despite initially pleading not guilty, she later changed her plea and awaits sentencing, expressing hope for vindication in a deleted Instagram post.
