Nurses Allowance

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has announced that the Ministry of Finance has approved an allocation of one hundred and seventy-seven million Ghana cedis (GH¢177 million) to settle outstanding allowances owed to trainee nurses across Ghana. This decision aims to ensure that all debts owed to the trainees are cleared by the end of the week.

Addressing nurses and midwives in Accra, Dr. Bawumia, who doubled as the 2024 flagbearer of the NPP, emphasized the government’s commitment to fulfilling its promises. He assured the audience that the Controller would transfer the allocated funds to the Ministry of Health, which would then promptly disburse the funds to the accounts of the nurse trainees. He reassured them that the payment would be expedited once the funds were received, stating, “It will drop.”

This announcement follows an incident where a final-year nursing student expressed concerns about not receiving government allowances during a campaign event in the Bono Region. In response, Dr. Bawumia pledged to address the issue with the Ministry of Finance and ensure that the allowances are paid.

Despite occasional delays, Dr. Bawumia reiterated the government’s commitment to sustaining the allowances for nurses and teacher trainees. He emphasized that efforts are underway to address the backlog of unemployed nurses and midwives, particularly in the 2020 and 2021 batches.

Acknowledging the critical role of nurses and midwives in healthcare delivery, Dr. Bawumia praised their expertise, empathy, and dedication, which contribute to improving health outcomes and overall well-being. He also highlighted the government’s initiatives, such as the agenda 111 state-of-the-art facilities, aimed at supporting the work of healthcare professionals and enhancing healthcare services in Ghana.
