President Akufo-Addo has taken decisive action by dismissing Rev. Dr. Ammishaddai Owusu-Amoah from his position as Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), effective immediately as of Wednesday, March 27. Additionally, the President has dissolved the board of the GRA without providing specific reasons, although it is expected that a new board will be appointed shortly.

In the wake of mounting pressure and controversy surrounding Dr. Ammishaddai’s tenure, sources indicate that Julie Essiam has been appointed as his replacement. Concerns had been raised by various groups, including the Concerned Citizens of Ghana and the Minority in Parliament, regarding Dr. Ammishaddai’s continued stay in office beyond the legal age limit for public officers.

In December 2023, the Concerned Citizens of Ghana had threatened protests over Dr. Ammishaddai’s prolonged tenure, along with that of his deputy, Ms. Julie Essiam. The Minority in Parliament, led by Ningo Prampram MP Sam George, had also demanded Dr. Ammishaddai’s dismissal, labeling him as persona non grata due to his extended stay beyond the mandated age limit of 60 years.

Mr. George further cautioned companies against engaging with Dr. Ammishaddai, asserting that he lacked the authority to commit the state to any contractual obligations. These developments highlight the significance of adherence to legal requirements and accountability in public office.
