University of Ghana updates plagiarism policy to incorporate AI

The University of Ghana has revised its academic integrity framework, particularly concerning plagiarism.

A notice signed by the registrar, Emelia Agyei Mensah and dated February 26, 2024, disclosed that the University Council and the Academic Board have approved important updates, focusing primarily on combating plagiarism and other forms of academic misconduct.

The updated policy, endorsed following recommendations by the Business and Executive Committee, demonstrates the institution’s steadfast dedication to maintaining the highest standards of integrity and ethics in academic pursuits.

Now titled the “Policy on Plagiarism and Other Academic Misconduct,” the document provides precise definitions of academic misconduct while detailing preventive measures and appropriate penalties.

A noteworthy enhancement to the revised policy is the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in academic activities and research.

Recognizing the widespread use of AI and related tools for academic support, the University emphasizes the necessity of originality in scholarly endeavors.
